Today Tim Cook announced the iPhone5 from the Moscone Center in California. This is the third time that he has taken to the stage, the last appearance was to announce the New iPad. During this keynote it was apparent that Tim Cook was not comfortable filling Steve Jobs shoes instead he had his key developers come up and share the new information instead of selling it to us himself. Today Tim went over some of the key figures that keeps Apple driving. But let other developers give the key presentation on the new changes.
- 84 Million iPads sold since the first roll out.
- 17 Million iPads have been sold from April 2012 – June 2012
- Apple has the #1 notebook in the PC market
- 7 Million Mountain Lion upgrades
- Over 700k apps in the Apple app store
- over 400 Million iOS devices sold (not known if all iOS devices are included or just iPhones)
iPhone5 (Phil Schiller guided us through)
It appears all of the leaks and rumors were correct. It is just a longer version of the iPhone4s and it has upgraded internal bits, and a new widescreen landscape display. Most apps should run natively on the phone and movies should be viewed better with the widescreen capabilities. Also they have tuned the display to have 44% more color saturation so the colors will pop even more, if you want to think of it as a supercharged Retina display. Check out my other post for further specs.
This phone does have the LTE/HSPA+/4Gchip installed in it! There’s now a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip. And has a unique Apple advantage with a dynamic antenna. This means that the data should move at a faster pace, but you are still limited to your carriers speeds.
The iPhone5 has the new A6 chipset in it, which means it will move much faster with the 1 gb of ram also paired with the new hardware. Phil stated that the new A6 chip is double the speed of the old A5 chip.
The iPhone5 has a 1080p rear camera and a 720p front facing camera. The camera now has face detection.
The new iPhone5 has 3 microphones 1 at the bottom, 1 at the top near the ear piece and one on the back next to the camera.
New speaker design to make sound even better it has a 5 magnet transducer and it is 20% smaller than the previous iPhone speaker. Also the earpiece is a noise cancelling earpiece and the overall sound quality has been broadened with Wideband audio.
The new iDevices will have a new Lightning power charger, this is similar to the mag safe adapters for the Macbook Pro. They will have adapters to convert the old 24pin adapters to the Lightning adapters.
Pricing $199 For 16GB, $299 For 32GB, $399 For 64GB
iOS 6
Apple is showing off the newest version of their iOS and it looks like they borrow some key features from other operating systems and apps that have been made famous on their own iOS app store( Keyring app that keeps all of your membership cards in digital form). They are showing off photo stream sharing (rip off of Samsung Galaxy Share), updates to Siri and other general os updates to Maps Siri.
You can preorder the phone on September 14th and it should ship by the end of September.
